Updated: 3 days ago

Photography is more than just a means of capturing images; it is a powerful form of expression that encapsulates stories, emotions, and unique perspectives. Cleo Cartwright, a published fashion editorial and portrait photographer based in Chicago, IL, embodies this notion. Her work transcends traditional portraiture, leveraging her lens to explore and communicate her identity and experience as a Black woman. As Cleo puts it, "Photography serves as a conduit for emotional expression," and her portraits often evoke a sense of "vulnerability and strength."

Cleo’s journey into photography is a compelling narrative of discovery and growth. It all began at the tender age of eight when she first picked up a simple film "point and shoot" camera. This childhood experience laid the foundation for her artistic career. Through her camera, Cleo began to "observe the world more deeply," capturing moments that resonate with her personal experiences and emotions. Recognizing the importance of representation, she says, "I aim to use my work to amplify voices that are often underrepresented in visual storytelling."

The collaborative spirit within the Chicago fashion scene has provided Cleo with numerous opportunities to engage with local designers and brands, enriching her portfolio. She has worked with esteemed clients such as Getty Images and BBYVVS Fashion, stating, "Each collaboration has allowed me to expand my creative horizons and refine my artistic signature." Her photography has been showcased in notable publications, including local Chicago newspapers, reflecting her commitment to storytelling through imagery and highlighting the city’s vibrant culture.
